Jacinto Guerrero Singing Competition

Introduction and past winners

Introduction

The Jacinto Guerrero Singing Competition was first held in 1984 and is now one of the central events organised by the Fundación Guerrero. Since 2000, as well as the elimination rounds, which are currently hosted by Madrid’s Escuela Superior de Canto, there has also been an orchestral final round, held at the Teatro de la Zarzuela in collaboration with the Orquesta de la Orquesta de la Comunidad de Madrid (ORCAM).

The competition is characterised by its focus on Spanish song and zarzuela, with particular emphasis on the music of Jacinto Guerrero (scores of whose music can be purchased from the Fundación Guerrero’s shop). Contestants will be required to perform music from this repertoire as well as opera anda items of their own choosing

The competition is supported by Radio Clásica, one of the stations of Spanish National Radio (RNE), which will record the final for broadcast at a later date.

Many leading figures from the world of music and singing have been members of the jury panel in the past, including Antonio Blancas, Eva Brinck Hilleman, Manuel Cid, Marimí del Pozo, Giancarlo del Monaco, Giuseppe Di Stefano, Antonio Fernández-Cid, Enrique Franco, Antonio Gallego, Antón García Abril, Bonaldo Giaiotti, Ernesto Halffter, Ana Higueras, Tom Krause, Félix Lavilla, Tomás Marco, Elisabete Matos, Alicia Nafé, Ana María Olaria, María Orán, Isabel Penagos, Paolo Pinamonti, Emilio Sagi, Luis Sagi-Vela, Helga Schmidt, Cristóbal Soler, Cheryl Studer and Teresa Tourné.
